Over 350 riders took part in last weekend’s Velo29-Altura White Horse Sportive. Fine weather shone on the beautiful roads of North Yorkshire with riders enjoying perfect conditions for the time of year.

The 3 routes ranging from 21.5 to 68.5 miles left the Stokesley HQ under escort of NEG Motor Cycles immediately onto quiet Country lanes. There was a mix of young and old with ages ranging from 77 to 9, with some keen club cyclists as well as lots of first timers to Sportive Riding which is great to see.

After only 5 miles the riders were on the hideously tough Carlton Bank, it’s 1860m long and lots of that is at 25%! However the climb was worth it with the long sunny descent towards Helmsley and some amazing roads which even the keenest local rider doesn’t know and hardly a car in sight! “There are some great little lanes in North Yorkshire that are still largely undiscovered” adds Velo29 Event’s Richard Williamson

“We’ve ridden around here for years and know some little gems that have been put together to make these routes. We don’t aim to make the White Horse a mega challenge, it’s got a few lung busters but it’s really designed as an enjoyable end to the season which you don’t need to really stretch your training to complete. It’s proving a popular formula and the numbers were well up from last year. The feedback at HQ was that everyone had a great day and we really hope they all return, with their friends in 2014”

That’s it for Velo29 this year, next year’s Sportive series kicks off in April with the Daffodils Sportive, again great quiet routes in North Yorkshire on beautiful roads. Full details at www.velo29events.com
