Danny Fox (www.cycledivision.co.uk/) won the 3rd round of the Western Cyclocross League in Pittville Park in Cheltenham on Sunday morning.

The junior rider broke away to win by 25 seconds, with John Whittington (Team Diabetes) outsprinting Scott Chalmers (DREAM Cycling) for second place.

Fox started the race from midway up the grid and it took him several laps to make contact with the early leaders. He and Scott Chalmers attacked soon after, quickly establishing a 15 second gap over Whittington with others dropping further back. Whittington almost managed to bridge across with two laps remaining, which is when Fox launched his winning attack. The move proved to be perfectly timed, with the other two tired and unable to respond.

Pre-race favourite Will Bjergfelt (MG Maxifuel) crashed heavily into a tree on the first lap. Though he resumed riding and kept pace with the leaders, he was unable to recoup the lost time and eventually finished 4th. Local favourite Benoit Davies also crashed early and finshed 8th.

Speaking at the finish, Fox said “I normally race in race in the West Midlands League where they run the Junior race separately, so it was good to test myself against the seniors. I started quite far back and think I made up most time in the technical sections. When I saw John catching me and Scott late on, I gave it some more effort and it paid off. I’m aiming for selection at the worlds which are in February in the Netherlands”.

John Whittington, who finished second, said “I led it out quite hard on the first lap and Will was right on my wheel when he crashed. Things then started to get a bit iffy. Scott was better than me in the corners so it was quite hard to keep with him. Luckily I had a second wind!”

First Vet was Martyn Green of Bristol CX. First woman was Helen Bennett of Cadence RT. The first youth was Cheltenham’s own Will Swarbrick.
