British Hill Climb Champion Jack Pullar showed just how good he is scrambling up steep hills beating some of Britain’s best on the slopes of Monsal Head

Rapha Condor rider Graham Briggs was second while Russell Downing (Netapp-Endura), coming back from injury, was third on his fixed wheel machine. The race saw some of the lightest bikes I have ever lifted including one from Cycle Division’s Chris Walker (a Scott Foil) who bettered his 2012 time to finish second in the vets. His daughter Jessie Walker was the fastest woman while James King of Sportscover/Bioracer was the fastest Junior.

The battle for the trophies was played out on the 1 in 6 slopes in front of hundreds of spectators, a bigger crowd that 2012 for sure, and with bright sunhine, why not! Winner Jack Pullar told Derbyshire Times “For the first half of the climb it seems like maybe you’re not going to have it in your legs and they start to burn and for the last 30 metres it’s just a blur and all you can hear is the fantastic crowd.”

“I have so much respect for everyone at all levels who takes part in this event because so many of them have gone flat out today and given it their all.”

Russell Downing revealed that no matter what the ability of every competitor, the pain levels were the same for everyone. “The burning and build up of blood in your arms and legs makes it very hard. Once again, it’s been great to ride Monsal.” His brother Dean, a former winning not riding on Sunday, explained as we watched that one year after winning, he had to go tthe doctors such as was the damage he’d done to his body going so deep to win the race.

Graham Briggs, whose luck on a recce of the climb could not have been worse when he left some clothing, car keys etc in a hedge while he did some efforts only to have them damaged by a hedge cutter explained to the Derbyshire Times “This was my second time at Monsal. It’s been great to come back here and see the top guys and everyone of all levels coming together with such a great crowd.”
