News: 48th Clayton Spring Classic

Race organisers report a big increase in rider entries with still two weeks to go before the on-line closing date for the 80 rider field.

With Rapha JLT, Madison Genesis, and Wheelbase Altura/MGD all entering full teams and the strong Junior line-up WD40 to lead the race away in group one, this 48th edition promises to be the best ever.

The men in black are back supporting the Clayton Velo race in 2014 whilst sadly, the colours of IG-Sigmasport will not.

Last year’s winner Richard Hadley will wear number 1 but with previous winners in the field including Tom Murray (Knights of Old) and new teams Starley Primal and KTM entered, places are limited.

Organisers Alan Roper and Peter Boast face the difficult selection process. Peter said “Sadly there will be limited places for category 3 and 4 simply on the grounds that many of the North’s top Pro and Elite riders will be in Clitheroe in force.

We will review future years as there may be scope to add a race or make it a weekend of racing and look after the grass roots of racing. The Handicap format was introduced 10 years or more ago to boost numbers but we now have the opposite problem with over 100 entries so far”.
