The NET (North East Trophy) is the first race of significance in the North East Calendar so the first coming together of the local stars and test of who’s riding well in the early season. It’s an E/1/2/3/4 handicapped National C+ ran over 25 laps of the 2 mile Croft Motor Racing circuit.

With all the expected names and teams there, the organisers knew they were in for some good racing. Many of the 3rd and 4th cats who’d enjoyed the last month of racing in the Velo29 Winter Series were up for pitting their form against the big hitters.

A lap of Croft takes around five minutes so the Elite/1st group was away when the 4th cats were breathing down their neck on the home straight. The handicapping worked well, taking about 10 of the 25 laps before the groups all came together.

The race quickly formed with the 3rd cats catching the 4th cat riders after 3 laps, the stronger 3rd cats started to put the hammer down hoping to hold off the 2nd and E/1st groups. The 5 lap prime was taken by James Sharp, formerly an Elite rider but off with the 3rd cats today and chancing his luck with an early attack. James stayed away for 3 laps before being absorbed by the then 4th and 3rd cat group.

It was a windy day so riders were lapping at an average of 25mph whereas on a still day, they’ve seen the Elite’s as high as a 31mph lap! Attacks came thick and fast over the next 10 laps with the 3rd and 2nd cat riders realizing they had a chance as the elites were catching slowly. At the same time, the Elite riders were attacking each other as they could see that there was a chance they wouldn’t catch the front of the race as a group.

A small break of 6 was established which lasted a few laps but was again absorbed by the group. After 10 laps, everything came back together, by which time many of the 3rd and 4th cat riders had been lapped. Immediately, attacks came, the first success was a group of 3 including 2012 NET winner Craig Anderson, now with Achieve/ Skinnergate. The trio enjoyed around 3 laps away and it looked like it might stick but with a big prize pot at stake, a win was never going to be that easy! They did stay away long enough for Craig to take the 20 lap prime.

Next came a group of six including 2011 winner Matt Kipling now with Team Velo29 Events. They were joined after half a lap by another group of 6 riders, including Lampier, Rutherford and David Lines. Lampier attacked quickly, opening a gap on the other 11 riders. When he crossed the line with 3 to go he had an 11 second lead.

The 11 riders looked at each other for too long, by which time Lampier had opened up an impressive 30 seconds lead. Riders chased well in the still very strong wind but Lampier was lapping fast, head down, big gear pushing hard on the pedals.

As the bell rang, it was clear victory would be Lampier’s, he actually managed to extend his lead on the last lap to 39 seconds! It was an impressive and well executed solo victory and one which was obviously sweet to Steve as he crossed the line, arms in the air.

Alistair Rutherford brought home the chasing group ahead of Jack Barrett followed closely by the rest of the break with the peleton coming in a further 28 seconds down. It was another great race in the Velo29 Winter Series of events, many spectators enjoyed the racing and the excellent facilities at Croft.

Next week Velo29 move’s to the 2 event Croft Spring Series, this is a non-BC event ran by Velo29, a new format for 2014. It’s only £10 to enter each of the events, no licence is required. They are 15 lap races and we expect a good mix of abilities and again some great racing. Go here for further information
