For the first time in the clubs history, seven teams (21 riders) joined forces to take on the 25-mile flat, but often windy, course. The day proved bright, albeit a little breezy, with plenty of fast times being returned.

First off for the MVC were the ladies trio, comprising of ‘young-gun’ 18-year-old Cassie McGoldrick and teammates Victoria Strila and Sally Smith. The ladies club record for the event was 1.10 so the ladies were keen to beat this time.

Despite a dropped chain by Cassie at the start the team rode strongly, each taking good turns on the front throughout and returned a time of 1.07.44 which was good enough to take the ladies title by over a minute to their closet rivals from PMR@Toachim House. They were also able to claim a new MVC club record.

Next for the men were Dan Tolhurst, Ian Stephens and Chris La-Thangue who proved they were a forced to be reckoned with being the only MVC to break the hour in 59.10 this time saw them crowned as the MVC TTT Club champions in 2014.

Off shortly after was Matt Fearn and brother Andy who teamed up with the legend that is ‘jet-pack’ Dave (Bellinger) who got up at 3.30am to get to the event! Despite Matt and jet-pack racing the day before they returned a respectable time of 1.06.54.

Following on from them were the ‘vets team’ of Harvey Pope, Paul Daniel and Andrew Collyer, who unfortunately punctured six-miles in. In true MVC style, quitting was not an option and Harv fixed his puncture and the team finished in 1.22.42. Their actual moving time was around the 1.08 mark.

Next up were Steve Smith, Rob Kennison and Rob Sapp, who almost fell foul of the clothing rule when Steve accidentally brought his wife Nikki’s MVC jersey to wear instead of his own, thankfully Bio-Racer clothing rep Rob had a spare gillet in his kit bag, so the men could ride. They came storming home in 1:00:48.

Taking on their first ever time trial were the team of Alex Wooley, Vincent Povey and Shaun Robinson who worked really well as a team to return a time of 1:08:07. Sadly their day was marred by the theft of Shaun’s Jamis bike from Riverside country park, Gillingham later on in the day.

Drama also unfolded in front of the final team off for the club, Lee Pilcher, Sydney Hawes and Tom Kennison when, as they were riding to the start, they came across a rider lying unconscious in the road. He appeared to have serious injuries so the team went to his aid and directed traffic around the casualty until an ambulance had been summoned.

A passing nurse also stopped and offered assistance and the rider was conveyed to the William Harvey Hospital where he is recovering. Despite completely missing their start time, the organisers let the boys have a re-start and they came home in a very good 1:05:41.

Special mention must go to second claim member, Matty Waters, who despite being in the first team off, smashed his PB to come home in 1:01:34.

The club wish the injured rider a full and speedy recovery.

Club coach Rob Kennison said: ‘It was great to see so many velo jerseys out on the course and I am proud that the team stopped to help a fellow rider. Everyone did really well, either by overcoming unexpected problems, or by excelling in their personal goals. We are delighted that the club came away from the event with a gold medal and would also like to thank organiser Steve Airey for promoting the event.’

VTTA PB for Phil
On Saturday, 8 March, MVC rider Phil Booth donned his skinsuit to wave the velo flag in the VTTA 10 mile time trial held in Harrietsham on the A20. Despite almost jumping out of his skinsuit when over zealous MVC supporters yelled at him from a passing car, he pulled a very respectable time of 26:49 out of the bag, knocking 10-seconds from his PB.

The event was won by Steve Berry of Artix Tacx RT in 21.39-minutes.

San Fairy Ann Crits
Well done to all of the MVC riders taking part in the SFA Crits held at Cyclopark on Saturday, 8 March. Richard Stokoe and Andy Hawes took part in the LVRC race. Andy was not feeling great and decided to step out, Richard looked strong when finishing.

Sam Farely at just 17-years-old did the club proud in the 3rd cats. Matt Fearn and Dave ‘Jet-pack’ Bellinger rode in the 4ths. None of the riders finished in the points this time, but they all looked awesome in their club kit! Well-done fellas.
