Report & Results – Yorkshire Day at The Races 2
(thanks Marc Etches)
A packed afternoon of racing held on the 1km circuit at Forge Valley saw over 65 youth riders go head to head and produced some excellent racing.
A new introduction for 2014 was a 3 lap decider race. This is a sprint race and gives youth A, B and C riders the chance to go head to head for a shorter race. This format will be rolled out over the White Rose Youth League for 2014.
After the youth riders had a dry run, the heavens opened for the senior races. The start of the 4th Cat race was delayed slightly to grab a clearing in the weather but this didn’t last long as the rain coupled with gusty winds battered all the riders.
The 4th Cat only race was decided on the first lap when gap appeared due to the efforts from Liam O’Toole, Sheffrec CC and the Andy Moore Auto Centres Racing pairing of Andy Bishop and Adam Turner. These three blew the field apart and showed that the weather wasn’t going to beat them.
With the main field in pieces the winner would come from this trio. They battled on and at one point O’Toole broke away to complete a few laps on his own but the Andy Moore Auto Centres Racing riders Bishop and Turner worked together and brought O’Toole back. Then the attacks bombarded the Sheffrec CC rider but O’Toole matched every move.
On the final lap the three came into the final 200 meters together but the outnumbered O’Toole was far too strong and rode to the line three bike lengths clear. Turner pipped Bishop to make it a good debut for the Andy Moore Auto Centres Racing riders. Further back Jon Schofield, Team Cystic Fibrosis won the sprint for 4th place.
The 2/3/4 mens race was pretty much dominated by Andrew Nichols from local race team, Langsett Cycles. The small punchy rider was active from lap one and always looked very strong throughout the race.
Working with his team mate, James Allen they eventually weakened the bunch to allow Nichols to break clear. Once the Langsett Cycles rider had a gap he never looked back, forging out a race winning advantage. In the closing laps Andrew Myers, Clifton CC bridged the gap but was unable to keep up with Nichols who went on to win. Myers came in solo to claim second and Jonathan Dexter, Andy Moore Auto Centres Racing completing the podium in third.
