Team News – Greg Van Avermaet leads BMC in Gent Wevelgem

BMC Racing Team Sport Director Valerio Piva said Greg Van Avermaet will be the team’s protected rider. Van Avermaet was third last year, runner-up at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and 10th on Friday at E3 Prijs Vlaanderen-Harelbeke.

“He showed good condition in Milan-San Remo especially and is in top shape,” Piva said. “Thor Hushovd is a former winner (2006) and is a rider I also expect to have in the final.”

Joining them are a pair of past top 10 finishers – Daniel Oss (fifth in 2010) and Manuel Quinziato (9th in 2009) – and Dubai Tour winner Taylor Phinney, who was held out of Milan-San Remo due to illness.

“My body has taken some days to recover,” Phinney said. “I go in hoping to get a good, long, one-day race in my legs before my most important two weekends of the season, Flanders and Roubaix.”

Van Avermaet said he is in the midst of a stretch of races that suit him well. “Knowing the parcours and the climbs is important, as well as getting in good position – then it’s all about the legs,” he said. “The Kemmelberg and the wind will be key points. I am hoping for a hard race so a small group can go to the finish.”

BMC Racing Team Gent-Wevelgem Roster (March 30):
Thor Hushovd (NOR), Sebastian Lander (DEN), Klaas Lodewyck (BEL), Daniel Oss (ITA), Taylor Phinney (USA), Manuel Quinziato (ITA), Michael Schär (SUI), Greg Van Avermaet (BEL).
