The  junior in her first road race on the open road won the bunch kick between the 20 or so riders who survived the rather sketchy 50 mile race.

The race saw the women do lots of laps of two circuits, both with long drags in them and whilst no breaks got away for long, riders were being dropped all the time, especially on the finishing circuit.

Winner of round 1 Laura Massey fell and after a chase got back on whilst Amy Gornall and a quite a few others also fell but were not able to get back to the front.

Despite the crashes, and the forcing of the pace on the climb, there was still a large selection for the uphill cross wind sprint and from that, Abby Mae Parkinson led Gracer Garnder out and the RST rider was already getting to celebrate a hundred metres from the line.

Afterwards, Grace, who had given her mother Wendy a lovely mothers day gift, said “This is a surprise! I did not know how I’d go or what would happen as it was my first proper road race (on the open road). It was really good though and a confidence boost.”

“It was pretty fast coming into the last corner which was a k to go from the bottom and Fusion lined it out and then Abby Mae did such a good job of leading me out. I opened up pretty early but it was alright.”

“This is a boost to the confidence for sure.”

The race was a real eye opener for Grace in her first race on open roads in Britain. The only ones she had done were races in Assen (Holland) and she said “I haven’t really experienced it before so it was a bit of a shock.”

“Riders were going across white lines in the road with cars coming head on so it was a bit scary.”

She did say though in a series about teams, that … “the teamwork between all the teams was really good and it was really fast.” Asked what her teams strategy was, Grace replied “We didn’t know how the race would go but we wanted riders up there and if there was a break, we wanted one of us in there. Nothing really formed so we just worked on being up there in the sprint.”

Grace is following in the wheel marks of her sister Lucy, which is tough for a rider so young trying to make a name for herself. Asked is she following in her big sisters wheelmarks, Grace replied, “we’ll see!”

“I do feel a bit of pressure but I’m me and I think I’ve grown out of being ‘Lucy Garner’s sister. Hopefully I can make my own career”.
