Team News – Womens Gent Wevelgem – Claire Thomas 8th

One of the most prestigious races in this year’s calendar, the Gent Wevelgem, awarded Velosport Pasta Montegrappa the best result so far this season, thanks to a magnificent 8th place from Claire Thomas.

The 116 Km Belgium Classic included two ascents of the iconic cobbled Kemmelberg. A large twenty-seven rider group, including Thomas, broke away on the second ascent of the Monteberg.

That group was then reduced to eight riders by Lauren Hall (USA National Team), Liesbet de Vocht (Lotto-Belisol), Roxane Knetemann (Rabo-Liv), Vera Koedooder (Bigla), Janneke Ensing (Boels-Dolmans), Sophie de Vuyst and Anouska Koster (Futurumshop-Zannata) and Claire Thomas from Velosport-Pasta Montegrappa and the advantage rapidly grew to more than 1 minute over the chase group.

The last 5 km of the race saw several attacks from each of the eight breakaway riders. With the finish line approaching, Laurean Hall, Janneke Ensing and Vera Koedooder tried again to avoid a group sprint and the 35 year old Lauren Hall crossed the line with a 1 second lead on Janneke Ensing, with Claire Thomas in 8th place.

Other Velosport Pasta Montegrappa riders, Lucy Coldwell , Lydia Boylan and Gemma Neil ( guesting for the Team ) finished comfortably in the main group that was lead over the finish line by last year’s winner Kirsten Wild.

Next UCI race for Velosport Pasta Montegrappa will be the Energiewacht Tour in Holland from the 9th to the 13th of April.
