News – Tour Ride 100 sportive announced
The announcement follows the national launch of the 2014 Tour of Britain and new charity partnerships with both Action Medical Research and Sue Ryder. Riders will have the choice of 100-mile and 50-mile circular route options and be encouraged to use the event to raise funds for the event’s Official Charity Partners.
Commenting on the news, Hugh Roberts, Chief Executive of SweetSpot Group, said; “Over the past five years The Tour Rides have proved to be very popular with cyclists, but this year following The Tour of Britain’s upgrade to HC status, we felt the time was right to focus on one key event per year and to make it the best it can possibly be for participants.
“The Tour Ride 100 will annually showcase some fantastic routes with Tour of Britain heritage, allow thousands of amateur cyclists to come together to ride in a professionally organised event and most importantly of all provide a great fundraising and awareness platform for our charity partners. We look forward to working with Action Medical Research and Sue Ryder to make this possible.â€
This October’s event will use the roads of the Staffordshire Moorlands and Peak District, including Gun Hill, made famous by recent editions of The Tour of Britain.
Commenting on the announcement, Action Medical Research Chief Executive, Julie Buckler says, “Action Medical Research is proud to be part of the Tour Ride 100, particularly with our passion for cycling spanning some 25 years. Cycling for charity is a great way to stay bike fit riding these fantastic Tour of Britain heritage routes, while at the same time raising money for an important cause; which for Action will mean helping us to fund even more vital medical research to help sick babies and children.â€
Heidi Travis, Chief Executive Sue Ryder said; “We are very excited to be chosen by SweetSpot as charity partner for The Tour Ride 100 and committed to support cyclists with their fundraising every step of the way.”
“This event will not only give cycling and challenge enthusiasts an incredible experience but also help us to raise valuable funds so we can continue to provide our incredible hospice and neurological care.
“Sue Ryder’s vision is to make incredible care available to everyone, no matter where they live or what their circumstances are. Being involved in this amazing event is a significant step towards making our vision a reality. Thank you to everybody who is taking part to support Sue Ryder.”
A regular venue for The Tour of Britain and Pearl Izumi Tour Series events, 2014 will mark the sixth year that Stoke-on-Trent has hosted a Tour Ride sportive, with the Staffordshire Moorlands and Peak District routes used by The Tour very popular with amateur cyclists.
Councillor Adrian Knapper, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at the city council, said: “We’re very excited to be hosting an event which is going to bring people together in a fun environment and raise thousands of pounds for charity at the same time.
“Previous Tour Rides have always been very well supported by the public but this one promises to be bigger and better than ever before, with the two charity’s committing to having at least 1,000 cyclists each.
“The day is obviously all about raising money for charity but it is also a chance to encourage people to get out and about and exercise, and that is something we as a council are committed to encouraging.â€
More details on the exact routes for each of the rides, along with further details of the start/finish location and activities surrounding The Tour Ride 100 will be announced in the coming weeks.
