Report & Result – The Keith Carter memorial Road Race
(thanks to Julie Rodman)
What a cracking race to be involved with at The Keith Carter memorial road race, promoted by Hull Thursday RC at Newbald circuit today.
The sun shone, the marshalls were all sporting smiles as bright as their jackets, and the weather stayed fine with just the strong wind for the riders to content with up the hill.
Joe Wilkinson was determined to take the race to the riders from the gun, and started a spirited effort which would earn him two prime prizes over the line. He was joined by Alex Fold (PH-Mas), Melvin Blackwood (Bridlington CC), Ian Russell and Josh Asquith (arrow cycles) and Mark McClean (Out of the Saddle). This group worked well together to establish a gap of 55 seconds over the main bunch.
Alex Fold took the third prime over the line, however as the hammer went down with two laps to go he lost contact along with Josh Asquith. The rear of the peloton was seeing a lot of riders retiring with mechanical issues from shipped chains to cranks falling off!
As the race went into the last couple of laps, 9 riders jumped clear which proved to be the decisive move. They motored down the narrow back lanes reaching 40mph at times. They caught the two trailing riders but couldn’t make up the gap on the leading three.
Mark McClean came in to take a well deserved win from a last minute entrant Melvin Blackwood and third place being taken by Ian Russell. Mark also got the last two primes. Richard Binks showing his climbing form came into his own to take fourth place from local rider Miles Flather Wilson Wheels and Luke Mumford Albarosa RC.
The best placed Hull Thursday rider was Mark Walker in tenth place. It was great to get the racing back on the roads again in the region and lovely to see so many cyclists coming out to cheer the riders on.
A credit to the Hull Thursday club and certainly an excellent spread for the riders to come back to at the village hall, should be a good date in the diary for most third and fourth cats next year.
