Team Raleigh’s lone representative Liam Stones won the Autostrasse Road Race after overhauling Strada Sport Junior Lewis Stevens on the crest of the finish hill at Willisham Tye. The pair had been part of a compact break that held a significant lead for 60 miles of the 75 mile Regional B category race near Ipswich.
It was a bright, chilly morning with a NW breeze adding to the effort needed on the Willisham Tye climb. Stones, 24, from Northampton, initiated the successful break and those joining him included Stevens (Strada Sport), Stuart Alexander (Richardsons/Trek) Edmund Bradbury (Cambridge University), Douglas Coleman (CC Luton), Theo Doncaster (CC Ashwell), Jonathan Harris (GS Avanti) and Alex Minting (Neon Velo).
Within an hour from the start this break had a lead of over a minute on a group of chasers amongst whom were Richard Wood (Arbis-Colbert), Ian Knight (Corley), James Fox and Mike Jackson (CC Luton), David Murrell (London Phoenix) plus Dan Young (neutralized by his move next day to the Neon Velo team). The bunch was already 3:30 behind the leaders.
Last time up the hill young Newmarket rider Stevens attacked first, Stones went next, reeled in the 17 year-old and had perhaps ten yards in hand at the line, with Stevens second and Alex Minting, Neon Velo’s Eastbourne member third followed by Douglas Coleman (CC Luton).
Ian Knight (Team Corley) was first of the chasers , taking ninth spot 2:30 down on Stones, while Dean Shannon (Richardsons/Trek) reaped the reward for a late sally off the front of the bunch to take 13th place at 6:06. The rest followed in ones and twos with David Warwick (Autostrasse RT,17th) top finisher for the promoters, who are a development squad allied to the Stowmarket & District Cycling Club.
