The Richardsons-Trek team turned up with five riders and from the start made their intentions clear that they wanted to control the race. There were initial attacks at the start from many riders but none of these came to anything until 15 minutes into the race when Andrew Griffiths of Richardsons-Trek made a significant attack and gained 20 seconds on the peloton.

A couple of laps later, Josh Green of Neon Velo came out of the bunch and made a big effort to bridge the gap to Griffiths and succeeded. Griffiths and Green proceeded to work well together to extend their lead and with exception of a brave but futile effort by Richard da Silva of PCH Cycles, all other attacks were heavily marked and nullified by the bright orange of the Richardsons-Trek team and the Neon Velo riders.

Griffiths and Green were able to build a lead of over a minute and coming into the last 5 laps the bunch knew they were racing for third place only. Winner of the 2013 supporting race, Simon Richardson and Martin Smith managed to get off the front at this point and gained 20 seconds on the bunch.

Going into the final climb of The Hoggenberg, Griffiths managed to drop Green to win the race by about 5 bike-lengths. In the two-up sprint for third, Richardson edged it over Smith and the bunch was led in by Joe Giggins in a blanket bunch sprint to give Richardsons-Trek 1st , 3rd & 5th.
