Event News – Lincoln Grand Prix

With just 3 weeks to go before this great weekend of cycling, sponsors are announced for this year’s Lincoln Grand Prix and the West Common Junior Road Race. Plumbase will be a new name this year, taking over from Jackson Building Centres with the nationally known company also promising its support for the British Road Race and Time Trial Championships to be held in Lincolnshire next year.

Managing Director, Andy Williams said “ Plumbase are proud to be a sponsor of this year’s prestigious Lincoln Grand Prix, the event is extremely important for the city but is known and recognised across the country as the very best one day cycle race in the UK calendar. As a National Plumbing & Heating merchant we have many customers who like myself are keen cyclists so we are delighted to be supporting this fantastic race”.

Plumbase are joined again by The University of Lincoln who continue their long running association with the races. The University has grown and grown and has become a major player in the many recent developments that have taken place in the City.

Elly Sample, Director of Communications, Development & Marketing at the University of Lincoln, said: “We are proud to again support the Lincoln Grand Prix Cycle Race. The event is a longstanding highlight of Lincolnshire’s sporting calendar which brings top class athletes and thousands of spectators into the city. The sight of competitors sprinting up Michaelgate to the finish line at Castle Square is always a great sporting spectacle! It is also wonderful to
see the continued success of the Sportive amateur race, which now attracts well over 1,500 riders from all over the UK.”

Major support for the promotion also comes from Lincolnshire County Council and the City of Lincoln Council who are both keen to see the race develop further in the area and are encouraged by the Economic Benefit Surveys carried out by Lincolnshire Sport showing the weekend brings almost half a million pounds in to the county.

There is also support from Estate Agents Pygott & Crone, The Lindum Construction Group, Impsport, Active Nation, Bluebells Flowers, British Cycling, Wells Vehicle Recovery, West Lindsey District Council plus web site and social media feeds by Ellmore Consultancy.

Race Organiser Ian Emmerson added ‘Events like this cannot exist without sponsorship and local authority support, together with that of the communities around the route and their contribution to the continuing success of the Grand Prix and supporting programme is vital. Our build up to next year’s championships goes on a pace with a greatly enhanced budget which will need this support to continue and also attract the interest of other sponsors and supporting companies’

This year’s races will act as a curtain raiser for the 2015 British Road Race Championships with both taking place on the same routes and distances proposed for 2015. This will mean the Grand Prix being held over a record distance of 121 miles with the juniors acting as a test for next year’s women’s championships at 65 miles.

Details and maps of the routes can be seen at the Lincoln Grand Prix web site www.lincolngrandprix.org.uk

The Santini Lincoln Grand Prix Sportive will take place on Saturday May 10th with routes to suit all ages and abilities. Advance entries are predicting to peak at around 1,500 this year adding a major attraction to the weekend. A new addition this year will be the Saturday evening Uphill Dash on a short route from Michaelgate to Castle Square. Full information and entries for both the Sportive and the Uphill Dash is at www.itpevents.co.uk
