News – London 3 Day in May

Fifty 2/3 cat riders are pre-entered for the 150m/240km race split into three equal distance stages, each starting at 13.30hrs. They will be competing for a £500 prize list with GC, stage and points classifications. The regulations are as for a normal stage race, with every stage having to be completed and the GC on total time.

On Saturday 3rd May, the first stage at the new VeloPark circuit alongside the London Velodrome will also be the first ever road race on it, so it might come as a surprise to the riders to find the two hills and the technical aspects more of a challenge than expected.

The CycloPark circuit near Gravesend has a similar looped layout on land that was once the A2 major road that was straightened out which gave the opportunity of cycling enthusiast Johnny Mack to start the fight to get the facility. This two is far from flat.

The Hillingdon circuit is for the speed merchants with 30mph race averages not unusual. But it is one of the highest points in West London and the ever present wind splits up the fields, especially likely over this longer than usual 50 miles.

The unique idea of a stage race using multiple closed circuits arose at a meeting of a consortium of the managements of 12 cycling facilities in the south east of England. The idea is that each stage is organized by a local club or organization so that at VeloPark it is development officer Jez Cox with the help of Jack Steven and the East London Velo.

At CycloPark it is Kim Anderson and the South East RRL in charge, while at Hillingdon it is Stuart Benstead of the Archer RC
