News – Date change for 2014 Forest of Dean Classic sportive

Sportive and training camp organisers Wheels in Wheels Events announce a new summer date for the 2014 Forest of Dean Classic sportive in Monmouth – Sunday 13th July 2014. Organisers of the Forest of Dean Classic sportive have postponed the event until the summer date of 13th July for safety reasons. Due to over-running road works with no guarantee of completion before the existing May date, the organisers have been left with no option but to delay the event until the summer. Another cycle event in the area on May 4th means rerouting is not an option either as this could potentially cause confusion for riders on both events as the courses would cross at several locations. Rider safety and enjoyment on the popular traditional course is paramount and the only way to ensure this has been to move the date.

The headquarters will also move back to Monmouth town centre where the Classic 90 mile (145km) and newer 62 mile (100km) courses will start and finish. The 90 mile route has always been a tough event with over 8000ft of climbing over 20 individual climbs counted down over the length of the course. The 62 mile course is a shorter version of the Classic route but still contains over 6000ft of ascent over eight climbs including the infamous 25% grind of Symonds Yat which comes less than 10 miles from the finish on both courses.
