News – Masters Road Race Championships

The first ever separate National Women’s Masters Road Race Championship is set to be a great success. This follows the success of the Women’s Olympics team, and their continued success on both road and track, and reflecting the growth of interest in Women’s cycle racing generally. The race takes place near Milton Keynes on Sunday 8th June with a field of close to 50 riders which is 200% up on two years ago, when just 16 Women rode alongside the male 60+ age group.

We are delighted that Paralympian super star Dame Sarah Storey has recently entered the field along with one of her team mates, Nicola Juniper, of the newly created Pearl Izumi-Sports International Tours team. With the likes of Natalie Creswick, Alexis Shaw, Laura Massey and Eleanor Jones also in the field, it is set for an exciting race over a sporting course.

A “dark horse” may be Jenny Copnall John, who lives locally to the course. Jenny is an ex professional MTB champion winning 6 British Championships and 15 Championship medals over her career. This event is one of six Masters races over the weekend of 7 and 8 June, with 300 riders competing from all over the country. This is a 60% increase on two years ago, when these championships were last held, and reflects the increasing interest and competitiveness across age groups.

Riders from all over the UK will be converging on the small village of Wing where six races will take place over the weekend. The races are based on five year age groups and begin at 30. On Saturday 7th June there are 4 races for Males aged 40-60+, whilst on Sunday 8th June there are the Male (30-39) and Women’s races, with each day’s racing starting at 0830.

Early on we could see that we were massively oversubscribed in the 40-49 age group, so we have created an extra race to the original program. And we are currently addressing a similar situation for the 50-59 year age group.

Enter on-line via BC website – closing date 11th May.
