Report – Beacon RCCs Little Mountain Time-Trial
Sunday held the Beacon Roads Cycling Club’s Little Mountain Time-Trial, a tough event based around the west of Worcester. The 39.5mile event would take in two circuits, firstly an undulating 17-mile loop before hitting the tough climbs of Stanford Bank and Ankerdine on the way back to the finish.
Mike Vaughan Cycles would have three riders in the event, twice winner Matt Clinton along with first-time event riders Jack O’Neill and Liz Powell. It would be a windy day, but never hindering times significantly, with the rain breaking for the morning, riders would stay relatively dry. Under careful guidance of Matt, the riders knew how to tackle the course and would be ready to set some fast times.
Liz would be the first of the Mike Vaughan Cycle team to hit the finish line on her Trek Speed Concept, with a time of 2:03:20 some 26s ahead of the next lady to take the women’s overall. For her first attempt at the challenging course, Liz finished less than 10-minutes down on the long standing women’s record.
Jack riding his Specialized Shiv then proceeded to put in a stunning ride of 1:43:02, way ahead of his target time predicted by Matt. The 19-year old would show he could be a possible future winner of the event, finishing third overall and clocking the 3rd fastest ascents of the two timed climbs of Stamford Bank and Ankerdine.
As last year’s winner, Matt was the last man off on his Trek Speed Concept, putting in a consistent performance through the circuit to slice 39s off his previous time of finish in 1:35:32 – almost 5 minutes ahead of 2nd placed Dean Robson (Somerset RC). This would be the third fastest time ever recorded in the event, only 1:26 short of the 9-year old course record. Matt would also clock the fastest times on both climbs by a significant margin to take the climbs competition.
The trio would also take the team prize, another unexpected result to round up a fantastic day for Mike Vaughan Cycles.
