Team News – Paramount CRT ‘Thru and Off’ Sessions
Paramount CRT, a road racing club set up 25-years-ago, is holding mid-week ‘Thru and Off’ sessions to give people the skills they need to go racing. Mike Jones, one of the founding club members and owner of Stan’s Cycles in Shrewsbury, set up the new ride-outs after growing demand from cyclists to learn more about the technique of racing.
“A lot of people come to us wanting to road race but there is a lot of skill involved,†said Mr Jones. “We want to make sure people are taught properly and that they can go on to take part in races and hopefully place well in them.â€
The sessions are held on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, meeting at Stan’s Cycles at 6.30 p.m. for about an hour-and-a-half of riding. Mr Jones said: “They are structured training sessions on set circuits to help both experienced and new riders with handling abilities and other core skills needed for road racing.
“The Tuesday session is a three mile circuit to teach about speed and fast corners while the Thursday session is a 25 mile out and back, where the tempo gets faster as the ride goes on, picking up just like a real race.†Mr Jones said the training sessions have already proved very popular.
“It teaches people how to ride properly in a group at a much higher pace. It’s about being smooth and steady on the bike but fast at the same time. Cycling in a group is fast paced and very disciplined,†he said. Ben Lawrence, managing director of Paramount CRT sponsors insurance broker Beaumont Lawrence, said Paramount CRT is all about competitive road cycling, whether that’s road racing, time trialling, sportives or training.
He said: “We want to give our members the chance to achieve the highest standard of cycling, competitive or recreational, that they aspire to. Cycling is a fantastic sport and learning the skills to race just give you that extra edge in the field. All too often cycling clubs expect their members to just know how to race without giving them the necessary training or skills to get the best out it. As a club we always enjoy watching people learn and develop from riders into racers.â€
The ‘Thru and Off’ sessions are aimed at Paramount CRT members but are open to anyone who is of a certain level. Participants must be at a good fitness level and keen on road racing. To find out more about the Paramount Cycling Racing Team, see www.paramountcrt.org.
