In the fast fading, cold light Alex Jolliffe (Team Terminator) seized control of the 25 lap, final scratch race of the evening and instantly marked himself out as a “contenderâ€. Jolliffe had already won two races on the first night of the new Bournemouth Track league, the sixteen year old showing strength & tactical maturity that was not there last term. In a first night devoted to scratch racing, Becky Raybould (Poole Wheelers) matched Joliffe’s dominance in the dedicated ladies races. Raybould is on the British Cycling regional talent team and a winter of quality coaching and training marked her out as “one to watch†even at this early stage of the league.
Bournemouth Arrow trio, Lucy Edmunds, Molly Haycock & Lauren Bishop shared the minor places and, with more confidence, could challenge Raybould. In the B league Paul Canham (Bournemouth Arrow) took a cagey 6 lap scrap with Gareth Rose (Bournemouth Arrow) winning the 16 lap version. Jolliffe had won both the A league 8 & 16 lap races before the final “All up†25 lap finale. Rob Haycock (Bournemouth Arrow) gallantly stood down to avoid the 28 field limit being exceeded.
Brendan Drewett & Lewis Martin (Fareham Wheelers) threatened early on but both sat up before Ollie Hitchens (Peter Hansford Racing) tried hard as the field behind started to split. Hitchens move was short lived. Graeme Lackford (Team Tor 2000) & Roland Tilley (Ridebike .co.uk) joined up with Hitchens & Drewett for a few laps off the front but could not make it stick. Jolliffe played his hand with four laps remaining, fair play to Drewett & Lackford who followed the action but both had no answer when the youngster turned up the heat.
