Report & Result – Welsh CA 25 TT Welsh Championship

There was plenty of happy faces around the result board of the Welsh CA first Championship promotion of 2014. A lot of it likely due to the relief in having a reasonably good day without rain, traffic cones or a bitingly cold wind. It was apparent however that some had left their training a little late with some times being 1 – 2 minutes off their expected times.

There were some very good times done nevertheless in the Women and Juniors event with Hayley Simmonds Velosport-Pasta Montegrappa

posting a 2:56 improvement. Juniors were very thin on the ground but Hefin Evans Bynea CC did his first solo 25 in 56:12. What about 15 year old Hetty Niblett as a star of the future with a superb 58:41, over a nine and a half minute improvement!

The Men’s event had a quality field but without some of the very top over-the-border riders. The smart money was on for a local win with a little bit of speculation as to who would fill 2nd and 3rd. The pundits were correct as Kieron Davies Team NBCC came in with just over a minute beating of David Crawley Fibrax Wrexham RC. Crawley had had the compensation of winning the Port Talbot 10 the day before. The RAF CA’s Justyn Cannon had jetted around the course in an excellent 49:58.

The team award was quite a tussle with 15 teams in contention. It was too close to call without some serious number crunching which the organiser Robin Field said would have to ‘wait until he got home and had a decent cup of coffee’. Coffee devoured, Field discovered that Cadence RT trio of Ben Anstie, Jamie Wilkins and Mark Keyford came out as Team Champions with 2:36:35
