(thanks Julie)

The race was marred by punctures with a number of riders only making it as far as the neutralised section before becoming victims. Actually the road surface didn’t seem horrendously bad, more a pitted surface than pot holes specifically.

Matt saw the most action (!) at the head of the race, the main bunch appearing to be on a procession/club run, struggling to top 20mph on the descent of Spicer House Lane toward the end of the race. Marc Etches tells me this was due to a block headwind on that section.

The race was made by 2 riders on lap 3 – Nick Barnes and Kieran Savage who got away with a slender lead of 15s. These were joined by 2 more – Geoff Martin and Michael Harris and the lead rose to 39s with 12 miles covered.

All was not lost and the peloton seemed to be closing in, but that never happened, although the lead yo-yod up and down, until lap 5 and with the lead at 42s after 21 miles the break’s advantage continued to increase.

Lap 6 and 25 miles, the lead was 1.16, lap 8 and 33 miles it was 2 mins and that’s when the steam seemed to go out of the bunch. Sat at the back, it didn’t even look like they were racing; they’d certainly lost interest in chasing, despite 6 more point’s places remaining.

Michael Harris lost touch with the other 3 but just managed to hold onto his 4th place on the run into the line on the final lap. Nick Barnes was a clear winner in the final sprint, easily distancing his fellow breakaways. The remains of the bunch came over the line approx 3 minutes behind.
