Report & Result – Iceni Velo Duff Morgan Road Race
(thanks to Fergus Muir)

Thirty-seven year-old Walthamstow rider David Bamford (East London Velo) outsprinted Peter Kirwan (Cambridge CC) on Skeets Hill, Shotesham to win the Iceni Velo Duff Morgan Road Race for 3rd & 4th cat riders. The pair had held a slender lead for half the 48 mile race.

With three hills every 4.8 mile lap, the course signally failed to match the stereotype “very flat, Norfolk”, nor did the 3 /4 cat field stay together for long.

Kirwan attacked early with Owen Marsden (VC Norwich), and carried on alone when Marsden judged 40 miles was too far for two to hope to stay away. The was indeed a brief regrouping but soon after half distance Kirwan, a research associate working in Cambridge but originally from Dublin, attacked again, this time with Bamford.

Behind a chasing group found themselves off the front of the bunch. At first this included Dieter Rowe (Strada Sport), Sean Dunlea (Neon Velo), Ben Locke (Braintree Velo) and Essex Roads RR winner Dale Johnston (VC Norwich). Gradually they were joined by representatives from Colchester Rovers, Iceni Velo and Cambridge CC – the latter club eventually putting four riders in the top ten finishers

However the leading pair stayed clear and as they passed Stoke Holy Cross church for the last time Kirwan attacked and gained a yard or two, but Bamford – who broke an elbow early in the New Year and has had to train mostly on turbo – came past on the final climb to take his first road race win.
