Report & Results – Ixworth Town Centre Circuit Races
By Fergus Muir
Steve Lampier (Velosure/Gordiano) lapped everyone, saving only second-placed Dean Shannon (Richardsons/Trek), on his way to an outstanding win on the picturesque village centre circuit at Ixworth near Bury St Edmunds
In the race for top category riders Lampier originally broke clear with Shannon but opened a gap on Southend man.
“Steve had just that extra mile-an-hour on me†said Shannon afterwards. However Shannon kept pressing on and took second spot alone while Lampier rode right through the lapped bunch.”
“There were late chases by Neon Velo riders Alex Minting, George Wood and Hugo Robinson, plus Steve Adams (Metaltek) and Dominic Schils (Zannata), with Schils, Adams and Robinson taking the next three places at the line.
The afternoon of racing on closed roads in the village centre was even bigger and better this year – a fitting conclusion to ten years of organising by Adi Grimwood
It is no surprise that next year it is going to take a whole team of West Suffolk Wheelers members to replace him.
As a counting event in the new Womens Eastern Racing League there was large women’s entry, their race starting shortly after the race for 4th cat men. It was soon clear that Emma Trott (Boels Dolmans) was intent on catching the men – which she soon did …emerging from the front of the race with only Sean Dunlea (Neon Velo) and Rob Ormond (Stowmarket) for company.
Ormond could not quite hold the leaders’ pace but still took second among the men. Trott and Dunlea, an international Junior at cyclo-cross now making a mark on the road scene, carried on to finish side by side, each winning their respective races. Ipswich rider Tanya Griffiths (Starley Primal) finished alone to score top WERL points, with Evgenia Ilyinskaya (Edinburgh RC) third among the women.
In the Under 16s Colchester rider Frank Longstaff of the specialist track-coaching Team Terminator took the win ahead of Dougal Toms (Iceni Velo) Jali Packer (Great Yarmouth CC) and Charles Broadway (Ipswich BC) – these four having formed a near race-long breakaway.
Adam Capes (Finchley Racing Team) won a hard-fought race for second and third cat licence holders after constantly appearing among the attackers, who also included Peter Hargreaves (VC Norwich) Lewis Stevens (Strada Sport) and Phil Hetzel (Ipswich BC).
Caelen Miller (ELV), Thomas Davies (Welwyn Whs) and Charlie Martin ( Barking & Dagenham CC) formed the leading group in the Under 10s while CC Ashwell’s Joseph Hadsley and Mark Lightfoot took the next two positions.
Other winners included Aaron Freeman Chelmer CC), Kathryn Anderson, Imogen Chastell, Thomas Durkin and Millie Gage all from Welwyn Whs while winner of the Ixworth Residents Fun Race was Kim Bonnelykke.
