Report – Great turnout for Matlock CC’s first womens RR
31 women, many of which were first time racers, lined up on the grid for Matlock Cycling Club‘s first ever Women’s Category 3/4 Race at Darley Moor, Ashbourne on Sunday 4th May.
The race followed on from a recent women’s only road race coaching session at the circuit, organised by Elisa McDonagh, one of the club’s members, which saw over 40 women take part. Many of which returned to the circuit to race again.
Category 3/4 women only races are extremely rare, so this was a perfect opportunity for the participants some of which had travelled from as far as Luton to race on a dedicated, traffic-free circuit.
This event was uniquely sponsored by a local company, Cicla www.cicla.co.uk a web based boutique specialising in female cycle clothing. Louise van Adrichem, from Cicla was very proud to provide and present the prizes to the first five over the line.
Organisers Christopher Mottram and Roy Osment from Matlock Cycling Club were “delighted with the number of entrants, and really pleased to have added a women’s class to their racing schedule†They are planning to hold more women’s only races at Darley Moor, one on Sunday 3rd August 2014, and another in September.
So keep an eye on their website http://www.matlockcyclingclub.org.uk/ for details. Ashfield Road Club is hosting the next two women’s only races at Darley Moor on Saturdays 7th June and 12th July. For more details see their website http://ashfieldrc.co.uk/
Louise van Adrichem, director of Cicla said, “It was amazing to see 31 women take to the circuit and race, many of which were racing for the first time. This was an incredibly important event, and showed just how important grass root cycling is. The demand is there, all it takes is a club to add a women’s only race to their schedule and the women will turn up to race. “
