Report

Marianne Vos took her long threatened stage victory in the Friends Life Women’s Tour, sprinting to the win in Clacton to move into the race leader’s yellow jersey after three days of action.

Vos headed home Emma Johansson and Giorgia Bronzini on the gently rising finish straight on Clacton’s seafront at the end of an action packed stage, run off in a little over two-hours in blustery conditions on the Suffolk and Essex coasts.

Despite a flat tyre Britain’s Lizzie Armitstead took fourth in the sprint to stay in the hunt for overall victory.

As a result of victory, Vos trades the YodelDirect Points jersey for the Friends Life Yellow Jersey of race leader, taking a eight second lead over Stage One winner Johansson, with overnight leader Rossella Ratto a further second back in third.

Vos continues to also lead the YodelDirect Points classification after her consistent run of second-third-first finishes, with Armitstead retaining the Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Best British Rider jersey and staying fifth overall.

Ratto’s consolation for losing the race lead is retaining the Matrix Fitness Best Young Rider jersey, while Sharon Laws retains the Strava Queen of the Mountains jersey, with a three point lead over Switzerland’s Jolanda Neff.

Numerous attacks throughout the stage, including one by Armitstead and Boels Dolmans straight from 0-kilometre and one that featured Armitstead, Johansson and Vos, were kept on a tight leash, resulting in frantic action.

Combined with strong winds this left several groups distanced from the rear of the race, but plenty of action at the front. Specialized Lululemon’s Trixi Worrack earned the day’s combativity award for her persistent attacking, with teammate Tiffany Cromwell’s last ditch attempt caught at the flame rouge as the peloton prepared for the bunch gallop.

Saturday sees Hertfordshire host the Friends Life Women’s Tour for Stage Four from Cheshunt to Welwyn Garden City.

The jersey wearers line up at the start of a sunny stage 3 in Felixstowe

2014_WomensTourStage3_063

Marianne Vos has a quiet pray whilst she waits for the start. In the mens Tour, the riders will line up perhaps five or ten minutes before but the women are on that line up to half an hour before the flag drops

Helen Wyman, Jessie Walker, Penny Rowson and Jo Tindley made sure they were at the front for the start.

The Yellow jersey Ratto finds some shelter to get ready for the race. Unlike the mens where nearly all the teams will have a motorhome or bus, its much more basic for the men with a few having motorhomes, one a bus and the rest cars and vans.

A lovely setting by the sea for the start.

No sooner had the flag been taken into the lead car, Lizzie Armitstead was on her way and on the attack.

Vos looks across to see Lizzie Armitstead come past her in the first sprint ….

The pace then never let up with scenes like this a constant reminder that the hammer was down at the front of the race.

2014_WomensTourStage3_016

In the first Queen of the Mountains, Sharon Laws got to the line first to increase her lead.

The race of course had plenty of schools out cheering the riders on

2014_WomensTourStage3_018

The next QoM was only a few miles from the first and this time Sharon Laws had a challenger, Jolanda Neff. Sharon leads Jolander by just three points with the rider in third 18 points adrift.

2014_WomensTourStage3_021

Unlike previous days when it was lone breaks getting away, Stage 3 saw a handful of small groups prize open a gap but were never able to make the moves stick.

2014_WomensTourStage3_027

And this is why… the hammer down and the peloton in single file…

2014_WomensTourStage3_033

Yellow jersey Rossella Ratto was in the mix the whole race but after finishing in 20th place at the finish, she lots the jersey to Vos because of the bonuses in the mid race sprints and final sprint.

2014_WomensTourStage3_034

Young Lucy Garner was in the select front group and finished 8th on a stage that saw the riders on their knees by the end.

2014_WomensTourStage3_039

As Vos explains in the press conference (coming soon), the stage was very Dutch except for the hedges… strong winds and narrow twisty lanes like this.

Trixie Worrack leads a break clear of the peloton but it went back …

2014_WomensTourStage3_042

Vos, Armitstead and Johansson then went head to head in the second sprint battling for the bonus seconds.

2014_WomensTourStage3_044

Johansson then went solo but was soon caught.

2014_WomensTourStage3_046

Worrack then tried again as a trio of riders tried to get away in the final quarter of the race.

2014_WomensTourStage3_048

Lizzie Armitstead’s team were all over the front in a rare show of strength seen in the race.

2014_WomensTourStage3_049

10k to go and its time for me to leave the race but with the breaks having been caught, the riders ease, take a drink and get ready for the finale battle.

2014_WomensTourStage3_082

Lizzie finished the race disappointed after a slow puncture ruined her final challenge for the bonus seconds.

The world champion Marianne Vos delighted with two jerseys, points and Yellow and always happy to show off her rainbow stripes!
