Report & Results – Welwyn Track League
(thanks to Peter Waghorn)
The opening Senior A with 20 riders was won by Andrew Hastings. Joe Fry took the Points race by a point from Andy In a fast highly competitive race. The Devil went to John McClelland by half a wheel from Joe Fry.
The 35 lap 10 mile final event was the best race of the meeting. The A group reeled in the 300m handicap given to the B group in the first 8 laps and continued at a frantic pace. A nine strong group opened up a gap with 18 laps remaining and lapped the rest of the field with 10 laps to go. Any attacks were nullified and with 5 lap remaining only 8 riders remained – Andy Hastings attacked with just under 3 laps to go and opened up a useful gap which he held as the bell signalled the final lap.
He held on for a well deserved win by 50 metres and is now the clear leader of the league. John McClelland led in George Farrell and Joe Fry for the minor places. The time of 20-33 was the fastest 10 mile time for two years.
Tom Boulton continued his good from in the Senior B group of 30 riders but was pushed hard by James McKay. Youth A numbers were low as riders saved their energy for the Youth Omnium the following day. Mitch Powell, Glen Dossett and Adam Looker took all the league points
The strong Youth B group were unfortunate to have a crash in the last stages of the points race – Lauren Higham (winner of the CDE group in 2013) was the main casualty with a broken collarbone. Matthew Ellis notched up two wins .
The 17 riders in the CDE group saw Joe Latham win the opening 3 lap scratch from Ollie Stockwell. Joseph O’Brien won the next two 3 lap handicaps chased in by scratch man Stockwell who then put in tremendous effort to take the final 4 lap handicap
