News – Scottish Track Championship events for 2014
Scottish cycling stars, present and future, will descend on Velodrome’s throughout Scotland over 6 dates; 30-31 August (Meadowbank, Edinburgh), 7th September (Caird Park, Dundee) and 17th, 18th & 19th October (Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Glasgow) where riders will have the chance to compete for the acclaimed Scottish Championship titles.
The popularity of track racing in Scotland is rapidly increasing and the number of track riders is continuing to grow. The opening of the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, which will be the host venue for the Track cycling events for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, has aided the development of track cycling whilst complimenting the recent upgrade of Caird Park in Dundee and the continuous use of Meadowbank in Edinburgh.
As well as the growth in track cycling, Scottish Cycling has seen the popularity of cycling in all disciplines throughout Scotland rapidly increase and since April 2009 have seen a growth of 142% in membership, which extends to around 12,000 individuals directly connected to the governing body; over 8000 individual members and a further 4000 club supporters in 156 clubs throughout Scotland.
2014 sees changes to format of the championship events with the Youth Championships become a standalone event, which is due to the increase in the number of Youth riders competing. The Scottish Cycling Board has also agreed to add the Points and Madison disciplines to the Scottish Cycling Championship list in all categories.
Entries for all events will be opening shortly and spectator tickets will be on sale for the Glasgow event in August. Spectator information for the Dundee and Edinburgh events will also be made available in due course.
