Report & Results – Chevin Cycles RR League 4
(thanks Julie)

Another fine Tuesday Spring evening saw a full field set out on the flat but winding course around the quiet lanes around Appleton Roebuck. But not quiet for long. A bold, early move from a small group of strong 4th cats came on the first lap. They maintained an impressive gap until the final stages of the race and stole the prime points after lap 3: 1st – Richard Kelt, Ilkley CC, 2nd – Marc Kelp, All Terrain Cycles, 3rd – Lee Morely, Ilkley CC.

Each group worked hard, chasing down the riders in front. Each group held their own well but the gaps narrowed slowly as the lap board counted down. Firstly the 2nd group caught the 1st – the 2nd group’s speed being notably driven by Simon Gueller (Chevin Cycle.com Trek). Then the scratch group caught the 3rd pushing the pace higher and higher until the race came together fully on the final lap. The handicap times for each group worked to perfection.

The scratch group were flying by this stage, their pace at the front creating a splintering of riders at the back of the bunch. Into the final stages, a bunch of 60+ riders sped towards the finish line providing an exciting finish for riders and spectators alike. Riders jostled for positions as The Wheelbase team took charge and looked favourite for a victory as Steve Ward Tom Barras lead out his team mate Alex Orrell- Turner. As Alex kicked for the sprint – disaster! His foot came out. More seasoned sprinters commenced their charge in to the finishing straight.

Dave Shackleton started the action but Giles Pidcock of Chevin Cycles took an early lead. Could he maintain it to the line? He could, convincingly, beating Pete Barusevicus (All Terrain Cycles) by a few bike lengths. Close behind in 3rd Richard Kelt (Ilkley CC), a very impressive result, amongst that field, by a 4th cat. Another impressive ride this week from Renee Saxton – the only woman to enter the whole series of races. She again finished in the bunch, holding her own against a whole field of men.

Our Green Jersey wearer Adam Duggleby was unable to defend this week due to European race commitments. He was doubtless gutted to miss out on that sprint. He maintains his series lead, narrowly, and will hopefully be back next week to defend again.

Many thanks to the whole team of helpers – driving, marshalling, commissairing, judging and facilitating a smooth running, safe and exciting race.
