Report & Result – Ian Mountain Memorial RR
(by Andy May

The 5th annual Ian Mountain Memorial road race organised by Andrew Lowrie and the Wakefield Cycling Club, provided the weather conditions which Ian used to love riding in. Glorious sunshine. Ian’s race has quickly become a popular event on the calendar and covering a distance of 100km, this years was no exception with a full field of 67 riders on the start line.

After a cagey first few kilometres six riders got away. Steven Fidler of Dave Hinde Racing, Frank Pilkington of Bill Nickson Cycles RT, John Hopkinson of TORQ Performance, Steve Guymer of Clay Cross Road Team, Andrew Shaw of Out of the Saddle and Andrew Markham of Lune RCC. Six soon became five when Markham was dropped.

Working well together the break managed to keep the chasing peloton at bay but only by around 45 seconds and the long straights on the circuit meant they never really disappeared from view. They stayed away for almost the entire race but by the bell they began to crack and the Peloton quickly started to reel them in. Almost inevitably, as they appeared over the brow of the hill for the final time the whole field were together. The event organisers nightmare. A bunch sprint of over 50 riders!

Steve Guymer, who was in the lead group all race, still had the legs to come out of the front of the bunch to take a well deserved victory. Event organiser Andrew Lowrie and Ian’s widow, Rae Mountain, would like to thank all the friends and family of Wakefield Cycling Club and the Northfield Hotel, without whom the event could not take place.
