News – Clinton’s Fast 10

Saturday, Kenilworth’s Matt Clinton took a trip down to Aylesbury and the Tring Bypass to compete in the Hemel Hempstead CC 10-mile TT. The Mike Vaughan Cycle’s rider was aiming to break his PB set on this notoriously fast course of 19:21 from last year.

A warm day, but with some wind and recent “tar and chip” road surface had reports that times weren’t going to be as fast as they could be. Never the less, Matt has been showing good form with a 48:26 (31mph) for a club 25-mile time-trial in the week (equivalent to 21st fastest rider ever) and was set on going under 19minutes, possibly aiming to break the course record of 18:38.

Setting out fast, at 5miles Matt had already averaged 32mph, with his speed increasing with a slight tailwind. Unknown to him, he’d picked up a bit of flint in his rear tyre and it was losing a fair amount of pressure. At 8 miles, his average speed had hit 33.4mph – enough to have gone under 18 minutes at this average – only 3 riders have ever gone under 18:00 for a full 10 mile TT.

Turning back up the course at the 8 mile point, a nagging headwind started bringing the average speed down – as did the deflating rear tyre. Hitting the line at 18:40, Matt finished just 1 second shy of the course record and smashing his PB by 41 seconds!

Only having got back to the HQ did Matt realise that he’d had this puncture and would have certainly taken the course record.

This however was still fast enough at 32.14mph to win the event by 24s and set Matt as the 14th fastest ever rider to have competed in a 10-mile time-trial.
