Club News – Success for Shropshire Team

The Paramount Performance Cycling Racing Team, based in Shrewsbury, has had a great season so far, said Ben Lawrence, managing director of sponsors insurance broker Beaumont Lawrence, and the racing team manager.

Graham South celebrated his third win of the season at the AA Brown Road Race at Market Harborough after winning the Shrewsbury Grand Prix men’s amateur race in May and a crit race in March.

His win took him from a category three rider to a category two rider.

“I’m thrilled,” he said. “That was my target for the year and I’ve achieved that by June so it takes the pressure off me for the rest of the season and I’ll be racing as a category two now.”

Mr South, 40, from Telford, said it was incredible to win the race at Lutterworth on the back of the Shrewsbury Grand Prix. “To win back-to-back was absolutely fantastic. I was pretty amazed given the quality of the field I was racing against. It was a good course and suited my cycling ability as it was not too hilly – although it was a really hot day.”

Vicky Grimmer, 31, from Shrewsbury, the first woman to make it into the prestigious road cycling team, which is part of the Paramount Cycling Racing Club, celebrated coming second in the Mid-Shropshire Wheelers ladies-only circuit race on June 8.

She said: “It was a good race. It’s my best result of the year so far. I went to the training camp in Majorca, which was great but then had a virus so now I feel like I’m coming back to where I was with my fitness.” Vicky just needs three more points until she receives her second category licence this season.

Dave Griffiths, 37, from Oswestry, a long-time member of the team, also won the Mid-Shropshire Wheelers circuit race on June 8. Tomos Owens, 15, from Llanymynech, is the youngest member of the Paramount Performance Cycling Racing Team. He won his first race of the season at an under 16 race in Stourport on June 7.

“It was great to win,” he said. “Being in the Paramount team is fantastic as I get lots of recognition as people know the Performance team.” Tomos has also been cycling in Belgium recently, where he competed in two races as part of his training. “Belgium is the home of cycling so it was good experience to be out there,” he said.

Ben Lawrence, managing director of sponsors insurance broker Beaumont Lawrence, and the racing team manager, said he is very impressed with all the riders in the Paramount Performance Cycling Racing Team.

“It’s great that mid-point in the season all the training the riders have put in is paying off. It’s great to see the riders delivering on their promise. Vickie, Graham and Tomos are new to the team and have really started to come good.

“Dave Griffiths continues to be successful. He is a great asset to the team and an inspiration to the younger members as well as to riders in the Paramount Cycling Racing Team Club.”
