Despite the distraction of England playing in the World Cup, there was still a good turnout of 72 riders at the Brooks Cycles Track League on Thursday 19th June 2014. The league also was lucky in dodging some heavy showers that were in the area with a full program of events taking place.
The Sprinters League events saw some close racing with Tom Rotherham ( Sportcity Velo ) winning the 2 up flying lap with team mate Jack Payne and later taking the Keiren League event in a close finish from the fast finishing Phil Houlton ( Brooks Cycles). These points has given Tom a good lead in this league as close rival Sean Mayer was not competing on this night. The other sprint event was the popular Team Sprint where Sophie Capewell ( Lichfield CCC) got her team off to a flying start before Steve Cronshaw and Phil Houlton took over to take the win.
The A Class endurance events saw Alex Braybrooke ( Velocity WD40) start to mount his challenge for the overall win as he rode aggressively in winning the 10 mile scratch after lapping the field with first time rider for this year and comeback rider Richard Hughes ( Rhyl CC). Alex then attacked again to cross the win on his own. He also won the points race and came third in the opening 10 lap scratch. The team pursuit event was won by Richard Hughes, Joe Swinnerton, (Swinnerton Cycles) and George Edwards ( Lyme RC).
In the B Class events Conner Fearon (Weaver Valley CC ) won the devil and Chris Blount ( Derby Mercury ) won the Course De Primes in a race where the points were spread over 5 riders.
The youth races were very competitive with Caleb Hill ( Lyme RC ) winning the 200m TT by 2 hundreds of a second from team mate Alastair Kennington. It was the same result in the 6 lap scratch in a close run event. The team sprint was won by the home straight team of Farley Barber, Alastair Kennington, James Duncalf, George Hancock all Lyme RC and Megan Williams ( Newcastle RC 2001 ).
The Freewheelers Events seemed unaffected in numbers by the Football with some great racing and plenty of smiles from the riders as they crossed the line. The top points scorers in each group were
Group 1 Harry Brayford Lyme RC 6 Points
Group 2 Jack Scott Lyme RC 9 Points
Group 3 Emma O’Neil Lyme RC 10 points
