Richmond Park 10.4 mile Time Trial – Sunday 22nd June

Conditions were possibly the best in the event’s history for the first Richmond Park time trial of 2014 held on Sunday 22nd June. It was already 15 degrees by 6.00am when the first rider was pushed off, and what little wind there was, was helpfully pushing racers up the draggy Sawyers Hill.

As ever the event attracted a full field and a more youthful crowd than found at CTT traditional events and almost half rode on road bikes with no aero aids. Also around 20% of riders weren’t members of CTT affiliated clubs, but able to ride due to the event’s “Come and Try It” status. All were itching to get their hands on the generous prize pot sponsored by Sigma Sport.

There were a record 11 juniors on the startsheet, making for a very competitive category. Ethan Hayter of VC Londres, with little apparent TT experience, took the top step with an impressive 24:41 from Gabriel Evans of London Dynamo. Gabriel’s time of 24:54, set on a road bike, was remarkable for a 16 year old school boy as it would have placed him 2nd in the men’s road bike category a mere 11 seconds adrift of the winner. Tobias Dahlhaus, just 14 years old, occupied the final podium slot with a time of 27:20. (Tobias Dahlhaus, Ethan Hayter and event organiser Martin Williamson in picture).

There was an easy win in the women’s road bike category for Richmond Park regular Maryka Sennema of Kingston Wheelers. She completed the course in 27:18 ahead of Michelle Sellars (29:03) and Bella Leach (29:07), both of London Phoenix. All 3 picked up valuable points in the London Women’s Cycle Racing League for their efforts – and Maryka’s win here extended her lead at the top of the League.

The women’s TT category winner, Detta Guerrini from London Dynamo, did an exceptional ride to get within the 9 seconds of the course record set before the resurfacing work and the emergence of 3 more unwelcome speed bumps! Her time of 25:48 was 45 seconds up on Helen McKay (Look Mum No Hands! RT) in 2nd and 1 minute 54 seconds up on Paula Rutherfoord (Boom Cycle) in 3rd.

The men’s road bike category also went to a member of the promoting club in Jamie Francis – a promising espoir making the most of his gap year by doing as much cycling as he can! His time of 24:43 was nearly a minute up on RP regular Mat Hammond (Dulwich Paragon) who finished in 25:37. Keith Lea, of Addiscombe CC, riding in Richmond Park for the first time was third in 25:59.

Last off was the competitive 49 strong Men’s TT category. Rob Sharland, of Kingston Wheelers continued his winning ways here with a second successive win – his 23:18, being too good for London Dynamo’s Stuart Spies (23:36) and James Stratton (23:42) in third.

The Richmond Park time trials are generously sponsored by Sigma Sport.
