A good weekends racing at Welwyn – Friday evening Track League plus a round of the Womens Omnium on a very warm Saturday afternoon & Dernyfest too!

Twenty two competed in the 5 event Omnium – Ellie Coster opened the proceedings with a two second victory in the 500m Time trial and – Eleanor Jones won the competitive 18 lap Points race while Ellie Coster was only 8th but recovered the overall lead winning the Sprint, third in the Pursuit and a win in the final scratch race. Past winner Janet Birkmyre was a model of consistency being placed in the top seven in all five events – her third place in the scratch event put her into second place. Hannah Blount and Niki Kovacs were tied on 29 points but third place went to Niki having the higher place in the 16 lap scratch

Only 21 riders turned up for the Dernyfest event – split into three 10 mile heats with the top 3 going through to the 9 up final. Matt Gittins paced by George Gilbert attacked from the start of the 50 lap final and lapped the field within 25 laps. Oliver Moors moved up into second place while a ding-dong battle for third spot went to George Farrell from Vojtech Blazeejowski who disputed the result after the finish.

The Friday Track League included the second round of the 10 lap handicap for A and B group seniors. With the A group battling the way though the B group who started with a 260m lead. Alex Minting and Martin Ruepp winning the two events. In the final 35 lap 10 mile newcomer George Clarke (High Wycombe) attacked with 4 laps to go and the bunch just watched him go and build up a lead – he still had enough energy to hold them off in the last lap for a well deserved victory appreciated by the spectators.

Forty Youth riders rode in the three age related groups – Will Raymond notched up two wins in the under 16 section while Millie Gage was in tremendous form in the under 14 group – three victories plus a second in the points race says it all. Four different winners in the under 12 series with Welwyn Wheelers and CC Ashwell sharing the honours.
