A perfect summer morning greeted the riders for the rollout from Cheddington Village as the riders made their way to the Kemesse style course at Mentmore. With a short sharp hill and tight corners to kick out of the course was a testing one as the day heated up.
An initial attack by a solo rider on the descent to Ledburn gained a handful of seconds, but the bunch soon responded and set the pattern for the day. Unfortunately the fine day also attracted several horse riders out onto the road between bridle paths and the race had to be temporarily halted when one was spooked. The peloton seemed lethargic after the restart and a small group grabbed a handful of seconds with the Aveas Partners Prime coming up. London Dynamo’s Alexander Evangelidis surged clear to take the prize money, but the move was again soon swallowed by the bunch.
With one lap to go, David Rydings of the Liverpool Century put in a big effort past the hillside finish, followed by the promoting Kenton Road Club’s Nick Long, but again they were soon caught as the bunch prepared for a sprint finish. Team Dassi’s Adam More surged clear to win by a bike length over the Army CU’s David Walker and Tom Leach from Gloucester City RC who battled to a closely fought 2nd and third place.
From an organiser’s point of view the one disappointment having to return nearly 80 entries and let riders down was the number of riders that failed to turn up on the day with no apology or advance warning, meaning some riders didn’t get a start that possibly could have.
Well done to all those who took part and hopefully next year’s event will be as successful.
A special thanks to Joel Stewart of Aveas Partners, www.aveas.co.uk  for their generous contribution to this year’s prize fund.
