2014 Kalas Cup Report (thanks Anna)
The sun welcomed the riders to Somerset for the 8th edition of the Kalas Cup two day stage race. A strong field had gathered with riders travelling across the UK to compete in one of the south west’s top races. However predicting the winner would prove a difficult task which would produce some very competitive and interesting racing.
Day One
Based at Merryfield Airfield, Ilton. It was South West rider Blake Pond (North Devon Wheelers) who blitzed the field in the prologue to take the first yellow leaders jersey of the race from Tom Bayliss (SW Juniors). The hour circuit race started fast and finished even faster with only a few not being able live with the pace, it was Pete Vincent taking the stage win with the time bonus meant that the yellow leaders jersey moved to the Mid Devon CC riders shoulders.
The green points jersey was taken by Tristan Robbins (BH-Solider) after consistently and successfully battling for the intermediate points. The last stage of the day was the 15km TTT, it was the South West Juniors that show their class taking 16 seconds out of the North Devon Wheeler’s team, this meant the yellow jersey had moved to the junior Tom Bayliss with white under 23’s leaders jersey also being held by Tom, but passing to joint second place holders Rob Hogg and Jake Coward also in the SW Juniors team.
Day Two
On a testing 16km circuit starting in the small market town Somerton. It was soon after the neutralised zone the break of the day went clear this hovered around one to one minute thirty seconds for the majority of the race. After realising that it could be the break of the day, the green jersey Tristan Roberts, who had missed the moved bridged the gap to the leaders and not only that, started straight away to contest the intermediate sprints for valuable points.
It was looking very like that the lead 17 riders were settling in for the sprint when the third cat rider Christopher Fennell (PMR Toachim House) that went clear of the break and soon built up a lead of over a minute. With one lap to go the lead was still about a minute but you could see that he was starting to suffer.
Twenty two minutes later he crossed the line to win the stage by a little over 30 seconds which with the win bonus was enough to take the overall win as well as the white jersey. Not bad for a third cat in his first road race, certainly one to watch for the future. Blake Pond and Rob Hogg completed the podium. The green jersey stayed on the back of Tristan Robbins after defend the jersey superbly.
Many thanks to the event sponsors , Kalas Wear Ltd, Overt Locke Ltd and Whitelake Cheese Ltd and all the officials and helpers make the race such a success.
