Ben Luckwell from Ride 24/7 soloed the last lap and a half of the sixty mile race to win the race promoted by Portsmouth North End CC on the Owslebury course just south of Winchester in Hampshire. The 48 year old rider from Thornbury near Bristol made his move from a group of five riders established a lead mid way through the race.
Former pro Ben Luckwell still winning- anyone curious as to how good this Milk Race stage winner was, check out the palmeresÂ
The race got underway under darkening skies but the rain didn’t really come to much as half the course remained dry while part had a small shower. It was on the first of seven complete laps that Oscar Hutchings (Bikeshed-UEX) along with Matt Woods (Hargroves Cycles) eased of the front of the bunch and soon these two had built up a 40secs lead, which they managed to hold for a couple of laps.
It took the bunch until lap three to pull them back to within sight, and around this point Oscar broke his rear mech cable.
With Oscar out Matt soon found himself slipping back to the bunch where upon a group of five then went clear. The group contained Ben and team mate Mark Perry (Ride24/7), Peter Medhurst (Bikeshed-UEX), Ben Simmons (Team Wiggle) and Jack Matlock (BH-Solidor-WAM Youth. This select group soon built a lead of 40secs with two chasers David Murrell (London Phoenix CC) and Will Hayter (London Dynamo) 30secs down with the bunch at 1min 40secs.
The leading group maintained their lead until Ben made his move with fifteen miles of racing left, and with Mark in the chase group not offering to help they allowed Ben to extend his lead to cross the line 1min 40secs ahead of a sprint for the other podium places. Ben Simmons just had enough to hold off Jack Mattock for second with the remainder of the bunch coming home in small goups
