Report – Unique Museum Race Hailed a Success

The second edition of the race featured an improved course which still took in the fearsome climb of the Hay Incline Plane and a steep descent from the canal to the Village Green. While ‘Urban’ cyclo-cross has become more popular over the past few years, there is nothing on the calendar comparable to this event with it’s beautiful museum location in the Ironbridge Gorge, a World Heritage Site.

Moving the event from the ‘cross season proper into the summer also seems to have gone down well with competitors. The winner of the Henshalls Insurance Brokers Senior race, Dan Wells caused quite a stir by riding a mountain bike to victory ahead of all those on traditional cyclo-cross bikes. Not only that, but he had enough time in hand to do ‘wheelies’ past the old mine workings and to ‘high-five’ organiser Nick Jeggo as he cruised to the win!

With two events now in the bag, the organisers are looking to make the race bigger and better for 2015. Nick Jeggo said “The races were a huge success and that’s largely down to this special venue. We’ve had so many lovely messages praising the event, we almost have to do another! The children’s races in particular were very well received and of course the museum is quite a magical place for youngsters. There’s huge potential here and we can do so much more given a good level of sponsorship and the right marketing.”
