Preview – Dean’s Farewell in Sheffield

The Sheffield Grand Prix has been hijacked by a retirement party and what a shindig it will be as the best racing cyclists in the country converge on a cycling mecca for Dean Downing’s last race. To add a little spice to the event, Dean (NFTO) is sitting in second place in the Elite Circuit Series a point behind Frenchman Alex Blain of Team Raleigh and one round to follow Sheffield.

2013 – Dean Downing wins in Sheffield in a chaotic finish as lapped riders get caught by the leaders. Got a feeling that won’t happen this year!

The race has only been run for a few years now but there was a time when it was a regular fixture and the course used now is tough. Up one side and down the other, the climb is also cobbled as it comes around the city’s town hall and onto the finish line.

Favourite has to be Dean Downing. It’s his home race and if he hasn’t been winning lately, he’s been on the podium and he has a strong team around him. British champion Adam Blythe returns home to Sheffield to race this mega event as does Dean’s younger brother Russell and the NFTO team is indeed very strong to help their captain do his best to repeat the win from last year.

Out to spoil the party though are the country’s top teams in a field of 93 riders which is a lot on this twisting and up and down course. Haribo Beacon are a local team and will be looking to make a name for themselves whilst the other UCI Teams, Madison Genesis, Raleigh, Velosure Giordana and a team synonymous with Dean, Rapha Condor JLT are all capable of winning. And in the middle of that list below is a name of a Yorkshire favourite, Scott Thwaites of Netapp-Endura who rode so well at Stockton recently.

Dean Downing 2014 – thumbs up for his last race in Sheffield … the pic was taken in Woking ;-)

The atmosphere is sure to have that love-in feeling with so many of Dean’s training friends in the race from young juniors like Joey Walker (RST Racing) to rival but Rotherham fellow chaingang rider Graham Briggs. Anyone on twitter, send your message to Dean using the hashtag #FAREWELLDEANO
