UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Heads to Paris for First-Ever La Course, by Tour de FranceÂ
The women of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team will take part in the first-ever La Course, accompanying the final stage of the 2014 Tour de France on July 27th. The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team has been selected as one of the 20 elite women’s teams to race on the 13-lap, 89-kilometer circuit course, finishing on the legendary Champs-Élysées in the heart of France’s capitol of Paris.
The relatively flat 7-kilometer course lends itself to an extremely aggressive race, likely ending in a bunch sprint in front of the Eiffel Tower and waiting crowds. The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team has assembled a roster of capable all-rounders and sprinters to contest the course, including multiple-time collegiate national champion Coryn Rivera, former British national criterium champion Hannah Barnes, Women’s Tour mountains classification winner Sharon Laws, and promising recent addition to the UnitedHealthcare Blue Train, Scotti Wilborne.
World class track specialist Cari Higgins and Olympic silver medalist Lauren Tamayo complete the roster, adding sprinting ability and experience, with Tamayo taking the role of team captain on the road.
Sports director from Britain, Rachel Heal commented, “This is a great new event for the team, as well as for women’s cycling as a whole. We’re honored to take part. With a successful first half of our debut season in the books, we’ve got a strong team going to Paris and the riders are looking forward to racing on Champs-Élysées.†General Manager Mike Tamayo added, “We might be a first year women’s team, but we hit the ground running with much success. Our roster for La course is stacked with talent, creating a podium-capable team. We have spent the last two months racing and training with winning La Course in mind.”
Other British riders down to ride are Olympic silver medallist Lizzie Armitstead, former world time-trial champion Emma Pooley and double junior world road champion Lucy Garner. Speaking in the Telegraph, Lizzie Armistead said, “I’m excited that this year’s Tour will feature the first La Course event because it’s such a huge step forward for women’s cycling. It’s going to be really impressive and we need to make sure we put on a good show because we don’t normally have access to that kind of audience at all.â€
