Nicola Juniper, in the form of her life, won the latest Women’s Team Series race held on the Naseby circuit. Superbly organised by Ray Taylor and the Welland Valley Wheelers with substantial sponsorship from Duncan Murray Wines – a long supporter of women’s racing, the event attracted an almost full field.
The early laps of the race was at a steady speed with little action but the latter half of the event saw a few attacks which were all never allowed much room. The race was looking to end in a bunch sprint, always a lottery of course where anything can happen.
Charlotte Thompson, VC St Raphael punctured but worked hard to get back into the bunch as did Lauryn Therin (Bonito Squadra Corse) who made short work of the gap she closed to the bunch.
Into the final lap and still the main bunch were ‘compact’ and this was to be the case until the final 600 uphill metres when the final placings were sorted. Strong rider Nicola taking the honours with Laura Massey, Epic Cycles-Scott WRT in a close second place.
Relaxing over a coffee winner Juniper explained her change of form, “Although I have been racing for a number of years, I have knuckled down, working with my great coach Nick Yarworth, fantastic sponsors in Echelon Rotor who are based in Perthshire Worcs who have backing from Reynolds-Boardman”.
“I gave up triathlon in 2008 and it does take 2-3 years to make the transition, also I did not really have the confidence and was just happy working for other people. It’s all come together and after I got my first result, I kinda got hungry for it”.
