When: Sunday 10.30am | 17th August | 100km, Cat 2/3/4 | Aberystwyth

“Dubbed as a ‘Hilly Classic’ amongst Welsh road racers over the past 20 years or so, the Tour of the Mining Valleys is back and explores some of the lesser known back roads of Ceredigion in Mid Wales. These roads take the race through some picturesque former mining works of the old lead & zinc mines of the Ystwyth Valley, namely Craig Coch, Lisburne, Frongoch & Wemyss.

Without a lump of coal to mention, thousands of miners were employed in the area during the 19th and early 20th century. Frongoch mine alone output over 100,000 tons of lead and zinc ores.

Having also ran as a 3rd & 4th cat race under the ‘Angela Davies Memorial Road Race’ after local club stalwart and prominent Welsh Cycling commissaire Ken William’s daughter, the race appeals to climbers due to its hilly profile with four ascents of the 1km New Row climb.

This year’s race is for 2/3/4 category riders and starts in Aberystwyth before heading out via 12 miles of rolling roads to reach the 14 mile circuit which will be tackled three and a half times to make up a total distance of 62 miles. Previous winners include former national hillclimb champion James Dobbin, and former Welsh road race champions Gruffudd Lewis and Gareth McGuinness.

Online entries close this Sunday (3rd August) although entries will also be taken on the line (£24).
