Report from  PH-MAS Cycling | Photos Here

The first weekend in August brought the first women’s race promoted by PH-MAS Cycling, as part of the Yorkshire women’s road race series. Organised by team manager Neil Hendry and run on the Bishopwood circuit near Selby, this was an event with a difference; the women’s race topped the bill, with the men’s 3/4 race running as the supporting event.

The aim of the day was to promote women’s cycling and encourage new riders. It was a huge success: of the 45 women on the start sheet, an impressive 38 took to the start line on the windy Sunday afternoon. There were with plenty of new faces, both riders in their first race and riders returning to the sport after a break. Thanks to sponsors Ilkley Cycles, Cutting House Otley, Aveda and PH Plasterers Ltd., there were prizes for top 5, plus the two most combative riders and the first 4th cat rider – chance for everyone to win something.

Unfortunately, the start was slightly delayed which was great for chatting with other competitors However, race organiser Neil kept everyone entertained on the line, handing out gels, energy bars and biscuits to keep the riders fuelled up while they waited. It wasn’t long before the course was cleared and the race was on!

The first lap was fast and furious, attacks from the start saw riders falling victim to the combination of high pace and strong winds. This set the standard for the rest of the race, with many riders putting in attacks in an attempt to split the group. Strong efforts from riders such as Eve Dixon (Team 22), Lauren O’Brien (RST Racing) and PH-MAS’ very own Natalie Hodson saw breaks forming, however the windy conditions meant nothing stuck and the race came down to a bunch sprint. Eve Dixon (Team 22) took a well-deserved win from Lauren O’Brien (RST Racing) and Charlotte Colclough (Sleaford Wheelers CC).

Thanks to Community Traffic Management, the National Motorbike Escort Group, Wistow Village Hall, Neil Prendergast, Rich Melton and all friends and helpers of PH-MAS for helping us run the event. Here’s to many more!

If you’re interested in improving your race skills, PH-MAS will be running some women’s only race coaching sessions on the YorkSport circuit. More info to follow – watch this space!
