The Lancaster City Centre Races are in their third year now but, after 2 years of the event being run by the City Council on the back of the Olympic Torch visit to the City, this year it became a club event run by Lancaster CC.

Under the leadership of Brian Kennedy a large group of helpers were assembled from the club, the Cog Set youth section and volunteer organisations. This group along with expert guidance from British Cycling and CDNW, with generous sponsorship from United Utilities and many local businesses, put on an evening of racing worthy of a National Series event and were rewarded with crowds and racing to match.

The City’s Dalton Square was taken over for the event with a podium and expert commentator next to the cobbled finishing straight whilst information and business stalls filled the centre of the square. The twisting and hilly one kilometre circuit, slightly modified and definitely improved from previous years, was lined with spectators who made plenty of noise to encourage the riders.

The first event was for Youth A & B riders, over 20 minutes, and it was encouraging to see the youngsters coming through the local Cog Set club dominate the race and take the top 3 places.

The 40 minute 3/4/W Club Riders race followed and it was again an event for the youngsters, with dispensation youth riders Robert Scott (PH-MAS) and Adam Hartley (Velocity WD40) riding away from the seniors to take first and second. Best of the women riders was Eve Dixon (Team 22).

The big event over 60 minutes and carrying £500 first prize was the Elite/1/2 race and the crowd were really getting into the racing now with a very vocal group outside the HQ at The Borough, supporting local top riders Jack Pullar (Starley Primal), James Gullen (Velosure Giordana) and Julian Pearson (Spirit Bikes).

After a blistering start Jack Pullar, fresh from his Commonwealth Games appearance, was away with Velosure Giordana pair Richard Hepworth and Brad Morgan whilst a chasing group formed with Spirit Bikes, Kuota and Metaltek riders pushing the pace hard. At the front Jack Pullar had shaken of his companions and was sweeping up the many and generous primes from local businesses before carrying on, in the fading light, to record a fine solo victory having lapped almost the whole field.

After race reaction from riders was that this was a great circuit, a well run and supported event and they hoped it would become a regular on the City Centre calendar.
