In the last sprint before the mountains, Dan McLay made no mistake in the 98 up bunch kick, winning easily on the 150 kilometre stage 3 of the Tour de l’Avenir after great work from his GB teammates.

He beat by a half-length Magnus Cort (Denmark) and Fernando Gaviria (Colombia). The stage saw two riders, Swiss Stefan Küng, double European Champion Hopes (Sprint and against the clock) and the Polish Piotr Brozyna, who were the first to try their luck.

Both went clear after 15 minutes of racing and stayed clear until there were only ten kilometres from the finish and during all that time off the front, the maxium lead they managed was only 2’45”. The Australians then took control with about fifty kilometers to go for their stage 2 winner Caleb Ewan but a crash in a messy finish saw him get held up whilst Dan McLay threaded his way through the argy bargy to secure his biggest win so far.

Dan said on twitter afterwards, “Massive win! Unreall help from the GB boys in crazy final” whilst teammate Tao Geoghegan-Hart said “Quality day at lavenir with @McLAYDan taking the win in a mental final. Proud to have done what I could for the team #gblads”.
