Yesterday saw the start of the 2014 UCI World Championships for Masters and Amateurs. Over the last year, cyclists from all over the world have competed at qualifiers to earn their place at the championships. This year, the races are taking place in the Ljubljana area of Slovenia, using the tried and tested routes of the Slovenian qualifier, the Maraton Franja.

The championships opened with the Individual Time Trial over a flat and fast 18.6km course to the north east of Ljubljana. Only seven Brits took to the starting ramp, putting in some good performances. The best ride of the day came from Mary-Ann Elkington in the 45-49 age category in which she finished an impressive 4th, behind Jane Kilmartin (Ireland) in silver medal place.

In the men’s races, Malcolm Smith’s 11th place finish in the 50-54 category (one of the largest age classes) was equally impressive.

Other results were:
Karen Poole (F35-39) 10th
James Hadden (M50-54) 30th
Ben Kenneally (M19-34) 47th
Jonathan Beckett (M19-34) 52nd
Nicholas Simpson (M19-34) 56th

The championships continue tomorrow with a team relay, and the Gran Fondo Road Race on Sunday.
