News – Bottrill Breaks 25 Comp Record

“It’s been one hell of a year and I can’t thank you enough for all your support” said Matt Bottrill who on Sunday morning took part in the Port Talbot Wheelers 25 mile time trial.

The main event was expected to be between Michael Hutchison (In Gear-Trainsharpe Rt) and newly crowned National 10 mile champion Matthew Bottrill (www.drag2zero.com) at 1pm.

The course for the race started in Glenyneth (South Wales) and riders would would ride an out and back circuit. The course is renowned for producing fast time’s with the fast start providing a gift downhill where riders would hit speeds of over 50 mph.

But once the riders are down in the valley, they open to the elements of the wind. It was a perfect day for racing with very little wind however and warm temperatures. It Was Blake Pond (Mid Devon CC) that set the standard high with 48:59.

The clash between Bottrill and Hutchinson would start at 12:50 with Bottrill, the first to go. On a mission to break the current competition record of 45:46 set by Hutchinson in 2011, the three time champion in 2014 was soon into his stride and hitting a maximum speed of 53mph on the descent.

Bottrill reached 10 miles in 16:58 making the record attempt very much on! But with a strong head wind, it was going to be a battle to the line to take the record. Pushing all the way to the end and suffering with every pedal stroke, Bottrill stopped the clock in an incredible time of 45:43 shaving just 3 seconds of the record.

But the question was could Hutchinson go faster? The answer was revealed just 10 minutes later with Hutchinson crossing the line in 46:49. The victory, and record, was Bottrill’s with a new competition record of 32.18 mph.

After the event we caught up with the celebrations of Team Bottrill. “I have to say this tops one amazing season. Winning the National champ’s over 10, 25 & 50 miles plus already having broke the 50 mile record, I have to say I’m over the moon”.

“I knew coming into the race it was going to be close. But Bob Tobin, www.cyclepowermeters.com said 45:38 would be possible but it was going to be hard! So the final miles I gave it everything I had and just managed to break inside the record. It’s been one hell of a year.
