A record number of registrations, 670, for the BWA West Midlands Cyclo Cross League meant that round one of the league at Shrewsbury Sports Village was going to busy and so it was, with 461 riders taking the start line on the purpose built road circuit before heading to adjacent woodland.

Ewan Grivell - Mellor

Feature races of the day had to be the Senior Men and Women’s races but in contrasting styles. In the Women’s race it was Hannah Payton being tracked the whole race by Lydia Gurley with a sprint finish a certain prospect it was Payton who made a better job of the adverse camber and sharp climb in front of a large crowd to take the win by 3 seconds.

In the senior Men’s race it was Steven Roach on the comeback trail who led a group of 6 at the end of lap 1 and in that group was no other than Olympian Liam Killeen a regular at the Shrewsbury Sports Village circuit fresh from the Commonwealth Games. Lap two though and Killeen was no where to be seen for what seemed an age.

A tyre rolled off Killeen’s wheel and he had to crawl to the pits before embarking on a big chase back with the commentator working out from the chip timing system that a catch was possible on the last lap. The crowd were willing Killeen on but he failed by just 8 seconds to take 2nd from a fast improving James Garrett.

In the Junior races it was a home win for first year Junior Ewan Grivell-Mellor with Wolverhampton’s Maisy Duckworth taking the win in the Junior Women’s category. Harry Yates took the Youth u16 race in style with a similarly commanding performance from Lewis Askey in the u14s. Under 14 girl Hattie Harnden was the overall winner of the girls race on a mountain bike.
